Student loans

As you consider training to become a teacher with the Rural Schools Alliance, you might be wondering about the financial support available. The good news is that funding is often available to help you cover the costs of your postgraduate teacher training. For courses with tuition fees, you may be eligible for government-backed student loans to assist with both your tuition fees and living expenses for the academic year.

You can still apply for both a Tuition Fee Loan and a Maintenance Loan even if you are also receiving a teaching bursary or scholarship, or if you have previously received student loans. Importantly, you won't need to start repaying your student loan until you are earning above a certain threshold. You also don't need a confirmed offer from us to begin your student finance application. However, please note that if you choose a salaried teacher training route, you won't be eligible for student finance.

Tuition Fee Loan:

You can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan to cover the full cost of your postgraduate teacher training course. If you are eligible, the loan amount will be paid directly to the University of Winchester, our accredited provider.

Maintenance Loan:

In addition to the Tuition Fee Loan, you may also be eligible for a Maintenance Loan to help with your living costs while you are training. The amount you can borrow will depend on your circumstances.

Additional Financial Support:

The government recognises that some trainees may face additional costs. You may be eligible for extra financial support if:

  • You have a disability or other health condition: This support can help cover the costs of specialist equipment or study-related expenses arising from your condition.
  • You’re a parent or carer: Additional funding may be available to help with childcare or other caring responsibilities.
  • You’re a veteran: If you are transitioning from the armed forces, specific support may be available to help you train to teach.

Important Information for Applicants from Outside England:

If you are from Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, or the Crown Dependencies, you will need to contact the student finance body in your respective country to understand your eligibility for funding.
