Decoding the Acronyms: What is ITT?

If you’re considering a career in the classroom, you’ve likely noticed that the English education system loves an acronym. From QTS to PGCE, it can feel like learning a second language before you’ve even stepped into a school!

The most important one to know right now is ITT.

What does ITT stand for?

ITT stands for Initial Teacher Training. You might also see it referred to as ITE (Initial Teacher Education).

Put simply, this is the professional training period you undergo to become a qualified teacher. It is the bridge between being a graduate (or career changer) and becoming a professional educator. At the end of a successful ITT course, you are recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which is the legal requirement to teach in most schools in England.

The RSA Approach: School-Led ITT

Not all training is the same. While some people choose a university-led route, the Rural Schools Alliance (RSA) offers a school-led programme.

So, what’s the difference?

  • Immersive Experience: On our programme, you aren’t just a student; you’re a member of the school staff from day one. You’ll be based in one of our partner schools across Hampshire, gaining practical, hands-on experience.

  • Expert Partnership: While you’re learning on the job, you’re also supported by the University of Winchester. You’ll work toward a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education), giving you 60 Master's level credits alongside your practical training.

  • Unparalleled Support: You’ll have a dedicated mentor in your school and the full support of the RSA team. We know that the journey to becoming a teacher is intense, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Why Choose School-Led Training in Hampshire?

Choosing a school-led route through the RSA means you’re learning the "how-to" of teaching in a real-world environment. You’ll see how experienced teachers manage behaviour, plan inspiring lessons, and support diverse learners—and then you’ll get to put those skills into practice yourself.
